A Travel Re-Inspired in Kalahari
The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is the second-largest game reserve in the world (Yellow Stone being the largest). Although admittedly, the game reserves is hardly ever on a safari itinerary for a first-time visitor to Botswana, it is most certainly added when people travel the country for a second time or more. A completely wild and remote game reserve where 95% of it is still inaccessible by travellers is one of our personal favourite destinations in Botswana.

It is that moment when one comes across those famously large Kalahari desert lions that a safari here becomes worth it in every way possible. Even at night, with the barking geckos and the distant roar of those lions, there is very little in Africa that can compare with a Kalahari safari.

  • The CKGR is the largest, most remotely situated reserve in Southern Africa and the second largest wildlife reserve in the world, encompassing 52,800 sq. km
  • Home to Africa's last hunting Bushmen
  • Big herds of desert-adapted antelope, such as springbok and oryx, can be seen walking along the dunes. Predators are easy to spot on the plains. The Kalahari black-maned lions are particularly stunning, and cheetah thrive in this open country
  • The pans and endless savanna of CKGR offer one of the best safari experiences in Africa
  • Worthwhile areas to drive are Deception Valley, Sunday and Leopard Pans, north of Deception Valley, Passarge Valley, and further south, Piper's Pan.
